Mr. Deepfakes, one of the internet’s largest deepfake pornography sites, has permanently shut down after a key service provider withdrew its support. The site, notorious for facilitating the creation and distribution of nonconsensual AI-generated sexual content, announced its closure shortly after Congress passed the “Take It Down Act,” which criminalizes the posting of nonconsensual sexual imagery. Although it’s unclear if the shutdown was directly linked to the new law, experts and advocates see it as a significant step in combating deepfake abuse. However, concerns remain that such content will continue to proliferate on less visible platforms, underlining the need for ongoing legislative and societal action.
