Meta Platforms has announced it will not sign the European Union’s newly developed code of practice for artificial intelligence, arguing that the guidelines constitute excessive regulation that threatens to stunt innovation and growth. Global affairs chief Joel Kaplan, writing on LinkedIn, criticized the code as overreaching and introducing legal uncertainties beyond the stipulated AI Act. The EU’s code, designed to foster transparency and safety in AI deployment, is set to take effect next month and is voluntary, though some tech giants such as OpenAI have signaled their intention to sign. Meta’s dissent aligns it with other industry voices urging the EU to delay or reconsider aspects of its ambitious new regulatory approach, underscoring growing friction between Silicon Valley and Brussels as the race to shape global AI governance intensifies.
