Meta said it will temporarily restrict teen users from accessing its AI “characters,” a move that comes days before a Los Angeles trial over alleged harms to children from social-media apps. The company will apply the block to accounts indicating they are under 18 and to suspected minors identified by its age-prediction tools, while keeping access to its general AI assistant. The decision underscores mounting legal and regulatory scrutiny of how generative AI and social platforms affect young users, as rivals including Character.AI have imposed similar restrictions amid lawsuits. Meta framed the pause as preparing an “updated experience,” signaling product changes as the industry braces for tighter oversight.
