Meta Platforms is rolling out an internal tool to record employees’ keystrokes and mouse clicks on company devices and apps, aiming to use the data to train AI “agents” that can complete routine computer tasks. The company says the data will be used only for AI development and safeguarded, but the move has stirred unease among employees already bracing for deeper job cuts and a broad hiring freeze. Meta has trimmed about 2,000 roles this year, slashed open listings from roughly 800 to seven, and is escalating AI spending after taking a significant stake in data-labeler Scale AI and launching its Muse Spark model. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has framed 2026 as a tipping point for AI-driven productivity, contending that smaller teams will increasingly accomplish work once reserved for larger groups.
