Foreign adversaries are rapidly weaponizing artificial intelligence to sharpen cyber intrusions and online deception aimed at the U.S., Microsoft said in its annual digital threats report. The company identified more than 200 AI-enabled influence and cyber operations in July—over twice the tally from July 2024 and more than tenfold 2023 levels—underscoring how nation-states and criminal gangs are using generative tools to refine phishing, clone officials’ voices and personas, and infiltrate sensitive systems. The U.S. remains the top target, followed by Israel and Ukraine, reflecting geopolitical conflicts spilling into cyberspace. Microsoft warned that many organizations still rely on outdated defenses and urged immediate investment in cybersecurity fundamentals. The report also highlights North Korea’s use of AI personas to secure remote tech jobs and exfiltrate data, as well as growing ties between criminal groups and state actors.
