At its 2025 Build conference, Microsoft presented a bold vision centered on AI agents—intelligent, semi- or fully-autonomous software designed to perform tasks for users and organizations. Microsoft shared that 230,000 organizations are already using its Copilot Studio for developing custom AI agents, and anticipates up to 1.3 billion agents in use by 2028. Demonstrations included new tools for developers and businesses, such as the Microsoft 365 Agents Toolkit, improvements to GitHub Copilot, and expanded capabilities for integrating agents with Windows apps. Companies like ODP Corporation are already leveraging these technologies to automate customer outreach and sales strategies. Microsoft aims to simplify the adoption and scaling of these AI solutions for both developers and enterprises, further accelerating the evolution of the so-called “open agentic web.”
