French artificial-intelligence startup Mistral said it will invest €1.2 billion in Sweden to build out AI infrastructure, including data centers and advanced compute capacity, as Europe races to develop its own capabilities and reduce reliance on U.S. tech giants. The Stockholm-area facility, developed with Swedish partner EcoDataCenter, is slated to open in 2027 and support Mistral’s next-generation AI models and a fully localized AI cloud.
Founded in 2023, Mistral has quickly become a leading European AI player after raising €1.7 billion from backers including ASML, Nvidia and Microsoft. The company, initially focused on large language models, has expanded into infrastructure with its Mistral Compute offering that bundles GPUs, APIs and managed services. Despite its rapid ascent, Mistral still trails well-funded U.S. rivals: OpenAI is pursuing a potential $100 billion round while Anthropic recently secured a multibillion-dollar commitment. Northern Europe’s cool climate and lower energy costs have made the region a focal point for AI compute buildouts.
