Nvidia-backed startup Starcloud launched an AI-equipped satellite as an early step toward building data centers in orbit, aiming to process data in space and reduce the need to beam large files to Earth. In an interview, CEO Philip Johnston outlined how on-orbit computing could lower latency and bandwidth costs for applications such as Earth observation and communications. The effort underscores Big Tech’s push to extend cloud and AI infrastructure beyond terrestrial networks, though the venture faces technical and regulatory hurdles, including power, thermal management, radiation hardening, spectrum use and debris mitigation. The launch positions Starcloud in a growing race among companies testing space-based computing as demand for AI workloads accelerates.
