OpenAI recently shut down ten covert influence operations utilizing its generative AI tools, with four linked to the Chinese government. These operations involved writing and posting social media content, creating internal reports, and running fake campaigns to sway public opinion and gather intelligence. Other disrupted efforts originated from Russia, Iran, the Philippines, Cambodia, and North Korea, focusing on misinformation, recruitment scams, and deceptive employment campaigns. OpenAI’s report highlights the increasing use of AI by state and non-state actors for sophisticated online influence tactics, though the company notes that these operations largely failed to reach widespread audiences due to early intervention.
