More than 1,000 Amazon employees signed an anonymous letter warning the company’s rapid adoption of AI is fueling layoffs, ratcheting up productivity demands and undermining climate goals. Organized by Amazon Employees for Climate Justice and backed by thousands of workers at other tech firms, the letter calls for clean-energy-powered data centers, guardrails to prevent AI-enabled surveillance and deportations, and worker input on AI rollouts and staffing decisions. The employees cite Amazon’s growing emissions and multibillion-dollar data-center expansion as signs AI growth could strain power grids and extend fossil-fuel use. Amazon said it remains the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, highlighted nuclear investments including SMRs, and reaffirmed its 2040 net-zero pledge.
