Perplexity AI said it is making its AI-powered Comet browser available worldwide at no cost, widening access to a product it first offered in July to $200-a-month subscribers. The move positions the San Francisco startup more aggressively against tech heavyweights such as Google, OpenAI and Anthropic, each pushing AI-infused browsing and assistant tools. Perplexity, known for its AI search engine, has faced plagiarism complaints and responded with a revenue-sharing program and new publisher partnerships, including CNN, Condé Nast and The Washington Post. The company teased a mobile version of Comet and a “Background Assistant” that can juggle multiple tasks as it seeks to convert a waitlist it says numbers in the millions.
