A recent pre-print study by MIT found that relying on AI bots like ChatGPT may contribute to cognitive decline, particularly in terms of reduced memory retention and critical thinking skills. The research analyzed brain activity in participants writing essays using either ChatGPT, traditional search engines, or no technological help. Those relying solely on ChatGPT exhibited the lowest neural activation, struggled to recall their own writing, and produced essays that were biased or superficial. The study suggests that frequent GPT usage can result in “cognitive debt,” lowering long-term learning, creativity, and independent thinking. The authors urge further research into AI’s cognitive impacts before large language models are widely adopted as beneficial tools.
