Yoshua Bengio, often referred to as a ‘godfather’ of artificial intelligence, has launched a non-profit organization called LawZero. The group’s mission is to develop “honest” AI systems designed to identify and counteract deceptive behavior by autonomous AI agents. The initiative, starting with $30 million in funding and a team of over a dozen researchers, includes the development of a system called Scientist AI, which assesses and flags potentially harmful actions by other AI systems. LawZero has notable supporters including the Future of Life Institute and Schmidt Sciences. Bengio emphasizes the need for oversight and the creation of AI as knowledgeable, impartial assistants rather than self-motivated entities. The project is intended to serve as a safeguard as AI capabilities rapidly advance, advocating for broader support from governments and research organizations.
