Runway, a New York-based AI startup, launched its Gen 4.5 video model and claimed the top spot on the independent Video Arena leaderboard, beating offerings from Google and OpenAI. The system, designed to generate high-definition clips from text prompts, emphasizes realistic physics, human motion and camera work, according to the company. CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela said the advance shows smaller teams can outmaneuver tech giants, as Runway—founded in 2018 and valued at $3.55 billion per PitchBook—expands distribution via its platform, API and partners. Backed by General Atlantic, Baillie Gifford, Nvidia and Salesforce Ventures, Runway plans additional releases following the Gen 4.5 rollout to all customers this week.
