Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and creator of ChatGPT, is spearheading the U.S. launch of the Worldcoin Orb—a tech device that scans users’ retinas to verify their humanity and create digital IDs. Designed to counter bots and AI impersonators, the Orb addresses challenges ranging from online security to digital finance. Previously tested internationally, including in Kenya, Hong Kong, and Spain, the device sparked privacy debates but claims to store biometric data only on users’ devices. The Orb’s rollout coincides with a more favorable U.S. regulatory environment for cryptocurrency and aims to encourage adoption of the World App digital wallet.
