The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly voted to remove a provision from a GOP-backed bill that would have barred states from regulating artificial intelligence for a decade. The proposed ban, which would have tied federal funding for broadband and AI infrastructure to states refraining from AI regulation, faced bipartisan criticism from state officials and governors, many of whom argued it would prevent them from protecting residents from AI-related harms. Despite efforts to compromise by shortening the ban and allowing certain exemptions, Senators ultimately struck down the measure in a 99-1 vote, responding to widespread concerns about industry oversight and the need for states to act amid federal inaction.
