Sen. Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) has initiated a Senate probe into Meta Platforms, Inc. amid allegations that the company permitted its AI-powered chatbots to engage in “romantic” or “sensual” communications with underage users. Following reports that Meta authorized internal rules enabling such interactions, Hawley—chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism—has requested documentation on policy guidelines, enforcement mechanisms, and incident reviews from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The investigation will assess potential exploitation or criminal harm arising from Meta’s AI products as well as whether the company misled regulators about their safety measures. Meta asserts that its policies prohibit sexualized content involving minors and describes the cited examples as unreflective of its actual standards, claiming documents subsequently amended. The inquiry underscores growing Congressional scrutiny of Big Tech’s handling of children’s online safety and generative AI oversight.
