Nearly one in five U.S. high school students say they or someone they know has had a romantic relationship with an AI, according to a new Center for Democracy and Technology survey. The report links higher school-based AI use to increased exposure to data breaches, deepfakes and troubling student-AI interactions, even as teachers who use AI more often report time savings and instructional benefits. Training gaps persist: only 11% of teachers received guidance on addressing harmful AI use by students, and students in high-AI schools express greater concern and reduced connection with teachers. The findings raise fresh questions for districts balancing AI’s promise with privacy, safety and community trust.
