A United Nations report reveals that the world’s leading tech companies experienced an average 150 percent increase in operational carbon emissions between 2020 and 2023, primarily driven by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and data centers. Companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Alphabet showed especially steep rises as the global demand for AI services and cloud computing surged, resulting in dramatically higher electricity consumption. The International Telecommunication Union highlights the environmental challenges posed by unchecked AI development, noting that data centers alone could soon surpass Japan in annual electricity use. The report underscores the need for standards and greater transparency regarding AI-related emissions within the tech industry.
