Major US technology companies such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Meta are lobbying for a 10-year block on states implementing their own regulations for artificial intelligence (AI) models. This provision, included in the House version of President Donald Trump’s budget bill, has divided both the AI industry and the Republican Party. Supporters argue the move is necessary to maintain America’s technological leadership, especially against China, and prefer industry-driven standards over government intervention. Critics, however, claim the moratorium would limit accountability for tech companies and give them unchecked power, with some lawmakers warning about the risks of deregulated AI development. The proposal now faces scrutiny as the Senate prepares to consider its own version of the bill.
