The UK Science and Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle, has directed the Alan Turing Institute, the country’s leading AI research body, to shift its focus primarily towards defence and security. In a letter, Kyle argued that strengthening AI capabilities is essential for national security and suggested leadership changes to steer the institute towards this new priority. This directive comes as the UK commits to significantly increasing defence spending and investing more in autonomous technologies. The move would mark a major departure from the institute’s wider focus on research in environmental, health, and ethical AI, raising debates about risks and the future role of the institute. Recent leadership turmoil and funding uncertainties have increased speculation about the institute’s future stability, as the government considers aligning more of its AI funding to support national defence objectives.
