Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has launched a pioneering initiative to use “agentic” artificial intelligence to accelerate his administration’s goal of reducing government red tape across the Commonwealth. Through a new executive order, a pilot AI program will scrutinize existing regulations and official guidance, comparing them to state statutes and other states’ practices to spotlight redundancies and inefficiencies. The initiative enables agencies to quantify savings, aiming to streamline requirements by at least 25%, a goal that has already resulted in significant cuts to regulatory text and projected taxpayer savings of $1.2 billion annually. State officials tout Virginia’s AI-driven model as a national benchmark for regulatory reform, with other jurisdictions observing its success as a potential template. While the AI recommends changes, final decisions remain in the hands of human officials, ensuring oversight. The effort underscores an emerging trend toward automation in public sector management, with a keen eye toward fiscal responsibility and enhanced government service.
