Visa is integrating its payments network with OpenAI’s ChatGPT to let AI agents not only recommend products but also complete purchases at any merchant that accepts Visa. Consumers will be able to link Visa cards to ChatGPT, while Visa provides authorization and fraud monitoring. The companies did not disclose commercial terms. The push follows OpenAI’s short-lived Instant Checkout, which struggled with errors and merchant fees. Visa says guardrails such as spending caps, approvals and allowlists will address bank and retailer concerns about disputes and fraud. Rival Mastercard is also rolling out AI-enabled commerce features, underscoring how card networks aim to embed themselves in agent-driven shopping as consumer trust develops and more transactions shift from human-initiated checkouts to autonomous systems.
