Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said artificial intelligence will reshape “literally every job,” as the nation’s largest private employer leans into automation and training to overhaul work. The retailer expects its roughly 2.1 million global headcount to remain flat over the next three years while roles evolve, pairing the elimination of some tasks with creation of new ones. Walmart has partnered with OpenAI to offer free AI training to frontline and office employees, and is expanding AI already in use, including its Ask Sam assistant, online grocery substitution algorithms and automated fulfillment via Alphabot. Executives said they are tracking which job types will rise or decline and aim to transition workers, positioning the company to gain efficiency without broad reductions.
