YouTube is set to implement an artificial intelligence-powered age-estimation system designed to identify users under 18 and enforce stricter protections for minors, including disabling personalized ads and limiting exposure to repetitive or potentially harmful content. The tool determines likely age based on viewing habits, video categories, and account history, regardless of stated birthdate. Users misidentified as underage can appeal by uploading identification. This initiative, building on supervised accounts and other safety features, targets concerns over youth exposure on the platform amid shifting corporate priorities emphasizing free expression. The technology will first be tested with a small U.S. cohort and follows reported successful international trials. YouTube remains the dominant platform among teens, underscoring the potential reach of the policy.
