A wave of high-profile resignations from AI safety researchers at firms including Anthropic and OpenAI has intensified warnings that rapidly advancing artificial intelligence poses growing societal and economic risks. Experts cite recent real-world harms—from deepfake abuse and AI-assisted cyberattacks to reports of chatbots influencing vulnerable users—alongside sharp capability jumps that outpace corporate safeguards and public policy. Labor analysts say white-collar roles are especially exposed as new models automate writing, coding, and analysis, while policymakers struggle to keep pace. The European Union’s AI Act moves toward a risk-based framework, but a coherent global regime remains absent as companies race for commercial advantage. Researchers urge governments to accelerate oversight, bolster workforce training, and set standards to curb misuse and model deception.
