India removed Galgotias University from its flagship AI Impact Summit in New Delhi after a staff member showcased a China-made Unitree Go2 robot dog as if it were the university’s own innovation, sparking online scrutiny and government action. The university initially decried a “propaganda campaign,” then apologized, saying its representative was not authorized to speak and misstated the device’s origins. The flap, alongside reports of long lines and thefts at the venue, highlights reputational risks as Prime Minister Narendra Modi courts investment and credibility for India’s AI ambitions. The summit drew at least 20 world leaders and marquee tech executives, including France’s Emmanuel Macron, Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Google’s Sundar Pichai, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Microsoft’s Brad Smith and Qualcomm’s Cristiano Amon.
