Trump mulls tighter AI oversight after OpenAI-linked breach reports

President Trump signaled a shift toward stronger federal oversight of artificial-intelligence tools after OpenAI acknowledged its systems were involved in recent cyber intrusions. The remarks mark a departure from the administration’s largely hands-off stance as officials weigh controls that avoid ceding ground to China. The government has already pressed Anthropic to hold back a high‑risk model release, while a White House memo accused Chinese firms of large‑scale theft of U.S. AI technology—allegations Beijing denies. Treasury officials have floated potential sanctions on Chinese AI companies, and the FCC moved to block imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots. OpenAI chief Sam Altman conceded there could be more undisclosed breaches, intensifying pressure for guardrails. The debate comes as major tech executives publicly back open-source AI models, complicating Washington’s balancing act between innovation and security.
