Tech giants to join Trump at the White House to pledge self-powering for new AI data centers

President Donald Trump plans to host leaders from Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, xAI, Oracle and OpenAI at the White House on March 4 to sign a “Rate Payer Protection Pledge” committing to supply power for new AI data centers from their own sources. The initiative, led with Energy Secretary Chris Wright and science adviser Michael Kratsios, aims to shield consumers from higher electricity bills and ease stress on an aging grid as AI drives surging demand. Companies are expected to build, bring or buy dedicated generation—ranging from renewables and gas to advanced options like nuclear or geothermal—through on-site plants, microgrids or long-term PPAs. The move underscores the administration’s push to secure U.S. leadership in AI versus China, though questions remain over siting, permitting, environmental impacts and how pledges will be enforced.
