Palantir pushed back on criticism that its AI-enabled defense platform could accelerate flawed targeting in wartime, saying responsibility rests with military customers. In a BBC interview, Louis Mosley, who leads Palantir in the UK and Europe, said Maven Smart System is a decision-support tool with a human in the loop and not an automated targeting system. The remarks follow reports the U.S. has used Maven to plan strikes in Iran and the Pentagon’s move to phase out Anthropic’s Claude from the tool over weapons-use concerns. Lawmakers and academics are pressing for stricter guardrails, citing risks of over-trust and limited time for verification, even as the Pentagon moves to make Maven an official program of record across the force.
