Sen. Elizabeth Warren called on the Pentagon and seven major tech firms to disclose contracts enabling artificial-intelligence tools on classified Defense Department systems, citing concerns over civil liberties and autonomous weapons. In letters to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and companies including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Oracle, NVIDIA, SpaceX and startup Reflection AI, Warren said “all lawful purposes” language leaves broad latitude for surveillance and targeting without clear guardrails. The push follows reports that DoD labeled Anthropic a “supply chain risk” after the firm resisted loosening restrictions on military uses. Pentagon officials have said the agreements aim to avoid vendor lock-in and bolster flexibility across the Joint Force. Democrats in Congress are advancing proposals to bar autonomous lethal targeting, mass surveillance and AI-enabled nuclear launch decisions. Warren requested unclassified responses by July 20.
