Alibaba’s U.S.-listed shares rose about 4% in premarket trading after the Chinese company said its Qwen artificial-intelligence model will power Apple’s new AI features in China. The integration—covering iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS—follows Beijing’s approval of Apple’s AI services and underscores how U.S. tech firms are leaning on local partners to comply with Chinese rules. The move comes amid escalating U.S.-China competition over AI; U.S. lawmakers are weighing curbs on the use of Chinese AI models, and Alibaba recently told employees to avoid Anthropic’s tools. Apple declined to comment. Separately, startup PrismML said it has compressed Alibaba’s open-source Qwen model to run on recent iPhones, highlighting a push toward on-device AI. Alibaba’s ADRs were last up roughly 3.7% in early trading.
