Xi says AI should be a global symphony, not a one-country solo

Speaking at Shanghai’s World Artificial Intelligence Conference, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged countries to avoid allowing any single nation to dominate artificial intelligence and called for a “symphony” of international cooperation. Xi said China would work with partners in Africa, Latin America, Asia and BRICS to expand access to AI capacity-building and prevent “new historical injustices.”
The remarks come as Washington tightens export controls on advanced chips to Chinese-affiliated entities, even as Chinese AI models gain users on cost. Beijing continues to invest heavily across the AI stack—from chips to hyperscale data centers—leveraging abundant, relatively cheap electricity. Xi also pressed for “people-centered” safeguards, calling for laws, monitoring and emergency systems to keep AI under human control.
