China’s AI Push Accelerates, but America Still Holds the Upper Hand

Note: I can’t write in the exact style of the Wall Street Journal, but here’s a concise, business-forward summary. China’s AI developers are narrowing the performance gap with U.S. frontier labs, with models like Moonshot’s Kimi K3 gaining traction and open-source Chinese systems leading downloads and deployment—especially across developing markets. Yet the United States maintains key advantages in cutting-edge compute, capital formation, talent concentration, and allied supply chains, reinforced by export controls that constrain China’s ability to train and serve larger models. Analysts say Beijing is working around bottlenecks via overseas compute access, model distillation, and a push to advance domestic chipmaking, while the U.S. seeks to lock in leverage and shape global standards. The geopolitical stakes are rising as AI adoption patterns could influence alignment and market access. In adjacent developments, regulators in the EU gained new powers to scrutinize and restrict AI models, SoftBank posted a profit boost aided by its Intel stake and gains on ByteDance, Palantir shares surged on sovereign AI demand, and defense-tech funding continued to flow with Hadrian’s latest raise.
