Inside SK Hynix’s $720 billion AI-driven megabuild remaking South Korea

SK Hynix is making a $720 billion wager that artificial intelligence will permanently reshape the memory market, building what it says will be the world’s largest network of memory fabs in South Korea. The vertically stacked Yongin cluster—designed to reach the height of a 50-story building—anchors a rapid expansion aimed at meeting surging demand for high-bandwidth memory, where SK Hynix held a 58% share in the first quarter, ahead of Samsung and Micron. The company has signed a slate of long-term agreements as AI leaders, including Nvidia, jostle for supply and co-develop next-generation custom HBM.
To bankroll the push, SK Hynix raised $26.5 billion with a July Nasdaq listing— the largest U.S. market debut by a foreign company—even as shares have slid roughly 21% from mid-July highs amid broader chip volatility. Seoul is pressing for speed, backing a national plan to double memory output within five years and offering at least $22 billion in support, while Samsung advances its own megafab projects.
The global race is intensifying. Micron is investing tens of billions in new U.S. fabs in Idaho and New York, and SK Hynix is building a $4 billion advanced packaging plant in Indiana. U.S. export controls bar SK Hynix from shipping leading-edge HBM to China, where CXMT is an emerging rival. SK Hynix argues the shift to custom, co-designed HBM—now moving toward HBM5—reduces commoditization risk, even as supply additions and geopolitics threaten to test the durability of AI-fueled pricing.
