Billionaire Questions AI’s Profit Impact Just Days Before Nvidia’s Earnings

With Nvidia set to report Aug. 26, investor Chamath Palihapitiya argued that AI has added “literally zero” to Global 2000 earnings, challenging a boom that has driven massive cloud and chip spending. Microsoft, viewed as a key barometer for enterprise AI demand, counters with hard numbers: fiscal Q4 revenue of $90.01 billion, full-year Azure above $100 billion, $678 billion in commercial commitments, 30 million Copilot seats, and an AI run rate of $37 billion—albeit alongside doubled capex to $116 billion and a 23% drop in free cash flow. Markets now face a test of whether surging AI “tokens” translate into durable profits as political pushback to data centers grows in states like Texas, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Nvidia’s results will help determine whether investor skepticism or Microsoft’s monetization narrative sets the tone for the next leg of the AI cycle.
