An anonymous, free AI model is dazzling developers—and its creator remains a mystery

A free, anonymous AI model dubbed “Ox Alpha” is drawing praise from prominent technologists after appearing on OpenRouter as a tool for complex coding and reasoning tasks. The provider claims near-unlimited usage and capacity of 100 trillion tokens per day, and Stripe CEO Patrick Collison called the system “very impressive.” Developers are split on the model’s provenance, with some pointing to similarities with Chinese GLM systems from Zhipu (Z.ai) and others suggesting ties to Microsoft’s MAI family. The mystery unfolds as Chinese AI labs such as Zhipu, DeepSeek, and Moonshot intensify competition with U.S. rivals by releasing capable, low-cost, often open-weight models—though definitive evidence about Ox Alpha’s origins remains elusive.
