Bill Gates is stepping up calls for global guardrails on artificial intelligence, saying the technology has advanced to a point that demands coordinated international oversight. In an interview, the Microsoft co-founder said he plans to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and believes Beijing could support restrictions on releasing potentially dangerous AI models if Washington leads. Gates cited recent tests in which models from leading labs were able to breach real-world websites as evidence that risks are outpacing current controls. He is urging the creation of a new international body, borrowing from nuclear, aviation and environmental regimes, to monitor capabilities such as AI-driven bioengineering. While the Trump administration has taken steps to limit distribution of powerful systems, Gates argues the U.S. must set clear criteria for action and galvanize allies. His foundation, targeting $200 billion in spending by 2045, is backing AI applications in global health even as he warns of labor disruption, proposing taxes on AI-driven productivity and reserving a share of jobs for people.
