Trump minimizes AI dangers, prioritizes U.S. lead over China amid calls to slow development

President Trump played down warnings about artificial intelligence, framing existential-risk concerns as overblown and arguing the U.S. must maintain its lead over China. His remarks, made during a visit to Ireland, followed calls from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei—backed by Elon Musk and OpenAI’s Sam Altman—to slow AI development to reduce safety risks, as well as dire public comments from former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon. In Washington, House Speaker Mike Johnson warned against rushing regulation that could curb innovation, while Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries urged a slowdown to protect the public. A bipartisan group has introduced the Frontier Act to establish a national oversight framework, and tech investors are pressing companies to enforce their own guardrails.
