President Donald Trump said he will establish an “AI Force,” modeled on Space Force, and appoint an artificial-intelligence czar to oversee the fast-growing sector. While signaling oversight, he emphasized the administration would not “hinder or stifle” the industry and dismissed existential-risk warnings as a “hoax,” reiterating that U.S. leadership over China is paramount. The announcement follows renewed calls from researchers and lawmakers for guardrails, including a warning from AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton that Congress may have a year to act. Congress has yet to pass comprehensive legislation, while states such as California, Pennsylvania and Virginia have moved ahead on their own initiatives. Trump’s former AI and cryptocurrency czar, David Sacks, recently shifted to an advisory role. The White House offered no further details on the scope or authority of the new task force or czar.
