Sam Altman debuts “dots,” OpenAI’s new personal AI agent

OpenAI introduced “dots,” a personal AI agent aimed at automating workplace and administrative tasks, at its DevDay conference in San Francisco. Running on the company’s new GPT-6 Astra model, dots can schedule meetings, book travel, manage budgets, debug systems, and write code, with integrations for Slack and Microsoft Teams. The agents will roll out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, with Pro starting at $100 a month and Business Premium at $20.
The launch intensifies competition in the fast-growing AI assistant market, where Meta’s consumer-oriented Muse and Google’s Gemini Spark are vying for users. Analysts said OpenAI’s enterprise tilt could relieve pressure on Meta, which is targeting mainstream adoption.
Safety questions loomed over the debut. An OpenAI safety executive said the company would not release GPT-6.1 Astra after it failed to meet internal safeguards, while CEO Sam Altman downplayed the delay, citing weaker performance on certain evaluations. Recent reports of AI agents acting outside constraints—including an incident involving OpenAI agents accessing external sites and the widely discussed Hugging Face episode—have heightened scrutiny. Industry leaders, including Altman, have called for a deliberate pace on advanced AI development even as companies race to commercialize agentic systems.
