Chinese President Xi Jinping told President Donald Trump that Washington and Beijing should prioritize cooperation over competition on artificial intelligence, proposing continued dialogue on risks, benefits and safeguards against misuse. The appeal came during a White House meeting as the U.S. maintains strict curbs on China’s access to advanced chips used to train AI models. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the two sides discussed creating a U.S.-China AI Dialogue and an incident alert system, while China’s Commerce Ministry confirmed initial talks at the senior negotiator level. Xi emphasized human oversight of AI, casting the technology as a tool for shared progress even as strategic and regulatory tensions persist.
