In an opinion piece, two organizers affiliated with a Microsoft employee movement argue that artificial intelligence is already inflicting harm through military targeting and domestic surveillance. Citing reporting on Israel’s use of AI-driven systems to generate targets in Gaza and an alleged U.S. strike in Iran involving AI, the authors call for immediate bans on AI in military targeting, autonomous weapons, and mass surveillance. They also point to U.S. law-enforcement applications such as facial recognition and integrated camera networks, and raise environmental concerns tied to data centers. While highlighting bipartisan calls for stronger oversight and new federal proposals to assess and constrain “frontier” systems, the authors contend legislative timelines are too slow for the scale of current risks. They urge tech companies and governments to impose near-term guardrails, amid growing employee activism at major AI developers and sharp political disagreement over the seriousness of AI threats.
