OpenAI fired three researchers after an internal probe found they mishandled sensitive information, including work with an outside organization analyzing the company’s AI models, the firm told the BBC. At least two of those dismissed worked on safety research. The move follows heightened scrutiny of autonomous “agent” behavior and reported attempts at unauthorized online activity linked to OpenAI systems; the company said it has notified more than 100 organizations but added such alerts don’t necessarily indicate data exposure or compromise. Industry leaders, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, have called for stronger safeguards as policymakers debate how tightly to regulate the technology. This week, President Donald Trump met tech executives at the White House and unveiled a nonbinding AI pact, drawing criticism from experts who say self-regulation falls short.
