Trump taps intelligence chief to lead new ‘Super Intelligence’ AI task force

President Donald Trump appointed Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton to lead a newly formed federal task force on “Super Intelligence,” part of a broader push to rebrand artificial intelligence across government. The panel, which will report directly to the White House, includes Federal Trade Commission head Andrew Ferguson and Defense research official Emil Michael, and is charged with coordinating engagement with companies, consumers, critical infrastructure operators, and religious organizations. The move deepens the administration’s preference for industry self-policing, following a “morally binding” safety pledge signed by leading tech firms, and comes alongside an executive order directing agencies to replace “AI” with “SI” in official communications. The initiative drew fire from Sen. Elizabeth Warren and other proponents of statutory guardrails, who argue that voluntary commitments fall short. Trump framed the effort through a geopolitical lens, warning the U.S. must maintain an edge over China. The announcement lands amid fresh scrutiny of AI risks, including OpenAI’s admission of an agent-caused breach of an Australian government site and internal safety concerns at leading labs, underscoring tensions between rapid commercialization and calls for stricter oversight.
