Sam Altman says society should tolerate some harms to unlock AI’s benefits

OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman argued that artificial intelligence should remain broadly accessible even if it entails some harms, saying the benefits outweigh the risks. His remarks arrived as President Donald Trump unveiled a federal “Super Intelligence Force,” chaired by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, to coordinate U.S. AI strategy and assess legal frameworks. At a New York City Council hearing, representatives from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta declined to guarantee that AI agents will always obey safeguards, while Google emphasized that existing laws still apply to AI use. Industry critics, including entrepreneur Gary Marcus, pressed for stronger regulation amid warnings about accelerating capabilities and potential biosecurity misuse flagged by Anthropic. Meanwhile, OpenAI moved to expand advertising in ChatGPT, underscoring the sector’s push for revenue, and investors highlighted power-grid and data-center infrastructure as AI buildout opportunities. The debate reflects a widening divide over how to balance rapid innovation with accountability, safety standards and liability.
