Dublin Tech Workers Sound Alarm Over AI’s Impact on Jobs and Society

Dublin, long a European beachhead for Silicon Valley giants, is emerging as a focal point for tensions over artificial intelligence in the workplace. As the Irish government promoted AI’s promise at a high-profile conference, union organizers and former tech workers convened a counter-summit at the Communication Workers’ Union headquarters to press concerns about job losses, opaque deployments of AI and a potential “knowledge collapse” as people rely on AI to study AI. Participants cited layoffs in content moderation and training roles and urged safeguards such as worker consultation, transparency on AI use, and even exploring a four-day workweek if productivity gains materialize. Organizers plan to bring recommendations to an Irish parliamentary subcommittee on AI. The debate underscores Ireland’s balancing act: preserving a lucrative tech ecosystem anchored by Google, Meta and Microsoft—drawn by low corporate tax rates—while responding to rising labor and accountability demands as AI transforms offices, classrooms and public services.
