Google, previously Scale AI’s largest customer, is preparing to discontinue its partnership with the data-labeling startup after rival Meta acquired a significant 49% stake in the company, a move valuing Scale AI at $29 billion. This partnership had been vital, as Google spent hundreds of millions of dollars on Scale’s human-labeled data for training advanced AI models like Gemini. The Meta deal has raised concerns among Scale’s other tech clients — including Microsoft, xAI, and OpenAI — who fear for the confidentiality of their proprietary research and data. As a result, many are moving away from Scale, creating opportunities for competitors like Labelbox and Handshake. Scale AI’s CEO, Alexandr Wang, will transition to a leading AI position at Meta. The shift marks a turning point in the AI data-labeling industry, highlighting the increasing strategic importance of vendor neutrality.
