Top executives from the BBC and Sky have criticized proposed UK government plans that would allow AI firms to use copyrighted material without explicit permission from rights holders. They argue that the proposed opt-out regime would harm creators, particularly smaller companies and individuals, who lack resources to defend their rights. Both leaders advocate for an opt-in system where AI companies must seek licensing agreements in advance. Responding to industry concerns, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy promised that the government will consult with creative industries to ensure future AI legislation protects the £125bn creative sector and ensures fair compensation for creators.
