The Trump administration is overhauling the Biden-era U.S. AI Safety Institute, renaming it the Center for AI Standards and Innovation, and shifting its focus from safety and regulation to promoting innovation and national security. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced the changes, stating that the new priorities involve evaluating security risks and foreign influence from adversarial AI systems, while pushing back against regulatory barriers perceived to hinder U.S. competitiveness. The move aligns with Trump’s deregulatory agenda and contrasts with Biden’s approach, which emphasized safety and privacy. Other steps by the administration include banning certain Chinese AI applications and launching a $500 billion Stargate initiative to bolster American leadership in AI.
